15 Charlottesville Officials Hold Buyers From Big Cities Responsible Inspection Ordered Of Meat Now Being Bought Direct From Farms I Special Dispatch to The Sun Charlottesville, Feb. 14 High bidding by Baltimore and Washington meat dealers is blamed by officials here for a serious meat shortage in this city and surround ing towns in the heart of Virginia's pure-bred beef cattle country. Charlottesville has a large stockyard where beef from the surrounding cattle farms is sold on the hoof. but with the shortage in the East and with" Western beef almost im possible to get. officials say, the Baltimore and Washington buyers have been taking a special interest in the Virginia beef.

Higher retail ceiling prices make it possible for them to outbid local dealers. The local abattoir already has slaughterer its current supply and is temporarily closed. Wherever Obtainable Local meat dealers have turned to the purchasing of pork and veal wherever they can get them, creating a health problem that is giving municipal authorities no little concern. City Manager Seth Burnley has ordered aa inspection of all meat butchered by the dealers. He has pointed out that the meat bought through the stockyards and other normal channels was inspected but meat bought by retail butchers direct from the farms was not.
