I had a lot of fun doing it, but I don't want to tell you anymore about it." And next? "I'll probably never work again," he said.

You're not serious. "No," he said, smiling again. "I may have felt that way at one time, but I don't now." He was supposed to do the film of Ernest Hemingway's "Across the River and Into the Trees," but the production has been delayed. "It's supposed to come together in October," he said. "I'm looking forward to it.

It's a more serious role." films enough to do the fourth, in which he continues as Lex Luthor, the sly but evil man who gives Superman a difficult time. "I have a different lair in the new film," he said. "I have a lair in the Empire State Building. I'm working on cre BEACON HILL DIET LOSING WEIGHT NEVER TASTED SO GOOD! Of course, after doing 55 films, a lot of those guys are starting to look alike." He did some soul searching for the basketball coach he plays in "Hoosiers," a man who takes a 1951 high school team to the Indiana state championship.

"There was a more subdued quality to that era," he said. "People didn't swear as much as we do now." At present, Hackman has no home. Well, that's the way he puts it. "I don't have a place to live right now," he says. This has been going on for four years, ever since his divorce.

"I was married for 30 years and have had no home for the last four," he said. He isn't specific about why the marriage ended, but he drops a clue or two. "It's hard when you are so self-involved," he said. "Acting is a very selfish profession." He says he doesn't get many offers of comedy roles, and you wonder why. He does, too.

"Maybe I'm not that funny," he said. Some of us said we did not agree. There are those "Superman" movies, and there was "Open All Night," the movie he did with Barbra Streisand. "I know," he said. "And I really enjoyed doing them." He enjoyed the "Superman" rvn Gene Hackman likes being an actor.

The only thing he doesn't like about his profession is the press junkets, those things the studios arrange between working actors and reporters. Of course, he smiles when he says this. He likes them enough to keep doing them. He is one of your more accessible actors, and it wasn't he who brought up the subject. It was one of the reporters, a man who asked Hackman if there was something he did not like about his career.

"Junkets are difficult, but I can't say that," he said. He did, though. "It's very hard work. Some people don't mind talking about themselves, but I do. I'm not crazy about it.

I do quite a bit of publicity, but it takes a lot out of you. There is a lot of tension involved." You wouldn't know it from looking at him. In person, Hackman seems very relaxed, very natural and very heartland. "People say that I am that type," he said. Would you describe it? "I was afraid you'd ask me that," he said.

"It's hard to explain, but you can tell. There is something about it. You can't put your finger on it, but it has something to do with honesty." And conservatism? "Maybe that, too," he said. "I don't really know. There is also the work ethic.

I have it to the point of compulsion. I feel I must keep working." This urgency has taken him in and out of some very insignificant movies, but Hackman is very practical about that. "I may be less than selective, but it's a trade-off," he said. "You can wait three years for the perfect role, and who's to say you can't do just as much with the imperfect roles?" He'd like to get away from that Midwestern image, though. "The older I get, the more I want to stretch," he said.

"People from my home town would drift down," he said. "One woman showed me pictures of her and my mother when both were very young. She also told me things I never knew about my mother. It was touching, and it affected my work." He remembers his boyhood with fondness, but he doesn't think he would like to go back to living in a small town.

"Well, I wouldn't mind if it were close to a place like San Francisco," he said. "When you've been at this for 35 years, you assume some kind of sophistication, and when you've lived in big cities that long, it's difficult to go back. I want to be able to go to the opera, the theater and restaurants. You tend to like bigger cities for that." Hackman has three grown children, two daughters and a son. His son, Christopher, 25, worked on "Hoosiers" as a second cameraman.

"He likes film," said his father. "He's talking about being an actor now. He is about the age I was when I started. I don't encourage him, but I do try to give him as much help as I can. Maybe as he goes along, I will give him much more." As an actor, Hackman is a man who speaks with his body.
