TToward A. Kelly, in his talk on Summer problems" before the porch class at the Woman's Club, of Roland Park. Frl- day afternoon, recommended a course of reading as one of the ways to get the most benefit from a summer vacation. Prefacing this part of his talk with the observation that Americans are appallingly ignorant of the Bible, Dr. Kelly suggested that his hearers take up the four Gospels for serious summer reading to help make sturdier lives.

The other books he sug gested were "Life of Paton, Missionary to "Jans Eyre," by Charlotte Bronte. "Wesward Ho," by Kingsley. "Orthodoxy," by Chesterton. "Wolfville," by A. H.

Lewis. "The Country Road," by Alien Brown. "Tho Cruise of the Cachalot," by Frank Sullen. "Father and Son," by Edmond Goese, "From a College Window," by E. F.

"Sesame and Lillies," by Raskin. "Psychology," by Dubois. BIG BRIDGE SOON FINISHED Edmondson Avenue Strnetnre Ex pected To Re Ready Shortly. orK on the new iamonason avenue brid is progressing to the satisfaction of City Engineer Fendall, who Is super vising lt. One side is in complete opera- tlon with the cars running over lt.

The arches of the other half are being com pleted, and lt Is expected that they will be finished before the expiration of the contract time. Two months will be taken up in the turning of the arches. Each arch has to be carefully supported as lt is gradually built up toward the keystone, or center. After the arch Is turned the center piece Is let down Into it, at which time there Is always a settlement of the bridge. In the case of the 139-foot arch on the north side there was a settlement of .24 of an Inch, which was much less than expected.

Mr. Fendall said that he looked for a set tlement of at least one inch. In the 60-foot arches, of which there are three, the settlement was so slight as to be imperceptible to the instruments used. The delay caused by the wait for this settlement Is very slight, as it is possible to put la immediately the upright pieces, which eerve as substitute for solid con crete In the interior of the arches. It is necessary to wait for this settlement, however, in.

the case of the side walls. GAHAN SUIT DISMISSED Divorce Proceeding; Abandoned And Difference Adjusted. 1 A haven of rest, whore the poor brutes of poor owners may revel In thr. cool, preen ciover and forget for thn while the rouch cobblestones and bot, dusty streets, np-penis to many lovers of animals, and the ladies hope to receive much encouragement. To start the work $.100 Is needed, and donations nro solicited. Tun St; will receive contributions. The association has its headquarters at S10 Fusor street, whore It cares for homeless docs nnd cats until a h.mie rag be found for thorn.

A short time nco It was seen that a place was needed for poor nnd sickly horses, where they could receive proper food nnd care, nnd for horses of poor men which the Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals condemns to death as being unfit for work, where they con Id be taken care of at a small cost to the owner and, if possible, bo brought back to health. The association has been offered th tiso of the farm of Mr. Thomas Turner, well-known as breeder of does, on the Philadelphia road, at a very small cost, so as to make lt possible for the work to be carlred on, nnd Mr. Turner agrees to care for the horses at the farm. The plan Is purely a cliarltaM on as nnlv ihti Imrooa for such as those oi na b- 'ho, when their horses become se- rioiislv 111.

nr rninhl tn nhtin Iv v-- voiiiiu aiuivitw for them. Not more than $2 a month will charged for taking oate of the horses. The plan Is carried out la other cities with, success. Tho farm of Mr. Turner win accommo date 40 horses.

Th headousrters of tha farm will be nt the othfs of the associa tion, on Ensor street. When man wishes to send his horse to the farm he will notify tho oitlclals, nnd an Investigation will made. If satisfactory, the unitnal will Lb sent to the farm. Mrs. Kdwln J.

Farber. president of tho association, in speaking of the plan jester-day, said: "This is a great work, nnd I hope It will be carried out. I see no reason why it should not lto, because nearly everyone Is Interested in the welfare of dumb animals." The association cc.ebrated its llrst anniversary last May. WILL CARE FOR SICK SOLDIERS Mllltlnmrn At Cninn Crothers To llnve SjNteniiitle Hospital, For the first time In tho history of encampments within the State of the Mary-land National tho sick of the ramp nt Camp Crothers, to be held ut Westminster from July IS to 25, will be eared for In a systematic manner, as is done at camps of Iho regular army. At all previous State enenmpmenta It has been the.

custom, now obsolete for each regiment to take care of its own sick men, and, although there is usually a small percentage of disabilities, inconven lence has resulted. Some regiment have been ill equipped with the dniKS and field hospital appliances neeeHsary in a enmp, while other orpnnl.atlons had practically nothing with which to administer to the sick. This summer Instead of bavins: each regi ment rare for Its own sick, there will be a field hospital Jn the onnip, and tho hospital corps detacliments attached to each, regiment will bo consolidated into a pro visional company for duty there. The Held hospital will bo situated on a hill over looking the camp and any sick man will be taken care of In it. Dr.

Howard momlor of thA staff of the Hospital for Crippled Children, nnd a hospital sergeant (first class') In th hospital detachment of the Fifth Infantry, has been commissioned a first lieutenant in the medical corps of the Maryland Na tional Guard and assigned to duty us as sistant to the chiof surgeon of the First Brigade. Ho will command tho provisional hospital company. Major Alexius Mcnlannnn, chief sur geon of the brigade, who will command the field hospital, will give the hospital corps of the State troops luidluonal rpponsiblll ties this year. With the more regular system that will bo In use every man will have the opportunity to learn something and ac complish a definite purpose. The members of the corps will not only act as nurses and general hospital attendants, but will be sanitary inspectors of the camp as well.

Each regiment will have a dispensary, In stead of a hospital. The dispensary will be in charge of the senior surgeon attached to tho regiment, and ull minor cases, such asfrequently occur in camp, will be treated. This will leave the field hospital, wblco. will be equipped with 12 beds, free to take care of more complicated cases. The hospital corps will leave for camp on July 17, nnd by the time the other troopa arrive the hospital will bo established.
