THE SUN, Thursday, January 5, 1978 DEATH NOTICES (215) Outdoors Well-performed gaffing facilitates landing fish By LEFTY KREH Gaffing a fish can be an art form or a disaster, depending upon the experience of the man handling the chore. Gaffing follows the battle of a big fish that the angler brings to boatside and wants to keep. When should you use a gaff? Simply put, when a fish has a mouthful of sharp, dangerous teeth, or is too big to land in a net. There are three basic types: release gaff, flying gaff and the conventional hand gaff. Release gaffs are generally 12 and 15 inches long.

They have a comfortable handle to grip, that is attached directly to the hook, which has no barb on the point. Fish that you intend to put back unharmed are taken on the release gaff. The fish is played out, then gently hooked in the lip, lifted into the boat and the hook removed. On bigger fish, they are frequently pinned against the side of the boat and held there while the hook is taken out and the fish returned to the water. I have seen competent guides easily handle a 70-pound cobia or 120-pound tarpon on a 12-inch release gaff.

The flying gaff is a specialty tool, used for offshore work. Mostly, they are employed with billfish, although some shark anglers will use the flying gaff instead of a tail rope. The hook, with a large barb, is set into a socket at the end of the handle. Most flying gaffs are equipped with 2 to 3 feet of steel cable, connected at one end to the hook and the other to a stout rope. When the mate sinks the heavy hook into the fish, it pulls free from the socket in the base of the handle, and the fish struggles against the rope held by the mate, or secured to a boat cleat.

The conventional hand gaff is what most Chesapeake Bay and small boat skippers use to land bluefish, dolphin, tuna and other salty species. Such gaffs can be purchased in stores with handles from 3 to 5 feet in length. Usually, the hook has an inside gape of 2 to 4 inches. Such a stout gaff when sunk into many fish will cause them to bleed violentlythis is especially true of bluefish dolphin. The heavy shaft of the hook causes a large hole allowing blood to flow easily.

Many people make a neat gaff by installing a or hook (similar to one on use a Tony Accetta No. 21 or 23 spoon) in a handle. Such a hook is more than strong enough land most fish, and the small diameter the shaft ages bleeding. It can also be sharpened easier. One of the faults with most gaffs is that they are not sharp enough.

need to be able to penetrate the fish quickly once contact has been made. Tough scales will let a point slide off. Experienced skippers triangulate the blade, leaving cutting edges, rather than just a tapered point. Most handles on gaffs I have seen are slick and hard to hold onto when wet and could lose you a fish. Wrapping coarse string or twine around the handles and varnishing it lets you keep a firm grip on the handle.

Stainless steel is now by far the most popular metal used in a gaff hook. Any hook that bends, then has to be reshaped, will probably fail on a good fish. Firstclass tempered metal is what you want. Gaff handles should be long enough to comfortably reach the fish from the boat. A boat with high sides will require a gaff several feet longer than one with low freeboard.

Proper gaffing technique is important. I have seen some people trying to gaff a fish that looked like a monkey hoeing in a potato patch. The gaffer should stand between the angler and the fish, so that both can see the quarry. This allows the gaffer to better reach the fish. Hold the gaff near the surface, do not wave it around; it only serves to frighten the fish.

Striking or stabbing at a fish frightens it, and if you happen to wound it, the angler will have considerable difficulty getting it back to the boat. Never hold the gaff in front of the line. Should the taut line strike the sharp point the game will be lost. A coil spring is sold that is supposed to cover the point for protection, 1 but springs away during gaffing operations. The problem is that it can catch in the line, meaning an almost certain loss of the fish.

You can use a short section of tubing, tape it to the handle near the hook, slip the free end over the point when storing it. Once you strike a fish with the gaff, bring it into the boat in a single sweeping motion. Have the ice box open and drop it directly into it to keep blood off the deck and prevent injury to occupants. Gaffs not in use, should always be stored safely out of the way but readily available. Shriver loses tight match to Romanian by 6-4, 7-5 TENNIS, from C5 15-year-old Tracy Austin, of Rolling Hills, Calif.

Miss Austin has won all three matches with her baseline retriever game against the aggressive tactics of Miss Shriver. However, the pride of McDonogh was on the verge of beating Miss Austin in two of the matches and some observers believe Miss Shriver may eventually surpass the Californian because of her size and allaround game. Another factor in Miss Shriver's rise to success is her desire to improve on every shot. Even when she is leading or playing well, the girl who picked up her first tennis racket at the age of 4 is constantly giving herself pep talks. "I know it may sound a little egotistic," Miss Shriver, said, "but I'm never really satisfied with my shots.

I always believe I could have hit this or that shot better. "I guess this is what drives me on. I think that's the best way to be." Also spurring her on has been coach Don Candy. "He can express things to me as nobody else has been able to do," she said. "I have confidence in him and will do anything he well, almost anything." Candy felt his prodigy was a "little more nervous than usual" before her match yesterday, "but she did not give an inch out there on the court.

She just ran up against a player with a lot of strength who played well the whole way. Ruzici never seemed to be aware that she was playing a kid." Candy said the whole game plan for Miss Shriver was to get ahead early and use her serve to carry her. "But she lost her serve in the first game of the match and was never ahead except late in the second set." explained the former Baltimore Banners' coach. "Pam had great problems keeping her second serve away from Ruzici's forehand and that was the In ninth game of the second set when Miss Ruzici broke Miss Shriver to cut the lead to 5-4, Miss Shriver yelled out THE: loud, "That's so bad. I didn't mean to do that," after serving to her opponents' lethal forehand again.

Miss Ruzici slammed the ball past Miss Shriver to win the game and start her comeback. "I know coach Candy would be saying in the stands, 'Why did she do explained the youngster. "I thought he might even come down out of the stands and tell me." After the next two weeks in school, is considering taking spending, another break to play in the Avon Futures tournament in Columbus, Ohio. "My whole life is going to be tennis," she said, looking ahead to the future. "It's going to be hard going back to school and concentrating on my studies.

But I know I need that degree to fall back on just in case something happens to my tennis game tomorrow. "At least, I keep trying to tell myself that." After being ousted from the singles competition in the afternoon, Miss Shriver came back last night to play her openinground doubles match. She teamed with 25- year-old Kate Latham, of Palo Alto, to give the third-seeded team of Betty Stove and Wendy Turnball a scare before losing by identical scores, 6-4, 7-5, to her singles setback. In other opening-round singles play last night, unseeded Kathy May, of Beverly Hills, upset third-seeded Virginia Wade, of Great Britain, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5; Nancy Richey elminated Lesley Hunt, 6-2, 6-2, and seventh-seeded Greer Stevens turned back Florence Nihai, of Romania, 6-2, 7-6. Miss May, 21-year-old daughter of David May who is vice-chairman of the May Department Stores, won the last four games of the third set to defeat the reigning Wimbledon champion and continue the rash of upsets in the tournament.

Second-seeded Billie Jean King was knocked off Tuesday night by Regina Marsikova, of Czechoslovakia, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3. Other seeds already out of the tournament are Wendy Turnbull (6) and Terry Holladay (8). seeded opening-round Martina match late Navratilova won her Tuesday Top night, defeating Sharon Walsh, 6-2, 6-0.
