Metro C16 THE EVENING SUN FRIDAY, JANUARY 23, 1981 Baby boom stretches Arundel hospital Executive home burglar try cited lished their careers, who are now having children. There are more first-time mothers 30 years old and over," she said. Population growth and Anne Arundel's housing boom during the 1970s may also have played a role, although the county's population has increased only about 8 percent since 1975, according to U.S. Census figures. The biggest single factor was probably much less socially significant' The June 1979 closing of the Naval Academy Hospital.

Unless they have time to sprint for Baltimore or Washington, faculty wives and military dependents now have no choice but to join the crowd at Anne Arundel General. when birth rates stalled, was tapped. The conversion work was completed Jan. 5 and the first tenants moved in. There is now room for 28 babies, and the capacity to handle 42 in a pinch, Mrs.

Rogers said. What's to blame for the hospital's "baby Did ZPG go the way of the liberal Democrat in 1980? That may be part of it, Mrs. Rogers said. "I don't think we're seeing just the two-child family as much. Quite a number of our patients are third babies." Another factor seems to be the return of many career women to the ranks of motherhood.

"We're seeing a lot of women who waited and estab By Frank D. Roylance Anne Arundel County bureau It's simple enough. When you have a lot of babies, you get stretch marks. Anne Arundel General Hospital has had so many babies in the last three years that it has had to make room for them by stretching its nursery into what used to be a storage area for infant formula. "I don't know if we're seeing the end of zero population growth or not," said Jan Rogers, patient care supervisor for the Annapolis hospital's nursery.

But whatever the cause, the effect is plain. The hospital helped 1,990 babies into the world last year, up almost 48 percent from the 1,337 born there in 1975. The new arrivals included 21 sets of twins and, Oct. 9, the hospital's first set of quadruplets. During that frantic week, the nursery, set up to handle 20 infants, had 37 competing for attention.

How did the staff manage it? "Very carefully," said Mrs. Rogers. Extra bassinets and isolettes were pressed into service, and the hospital's "float pool" of part-time maternity nurses was mobilized. But even after the crush, the average daily count in the nursery was topping 20. Clearly, more space was needed.

The storage room, designed as part of the nursery but mothballed charged with the murders of three local men apparently killed and robbed after giving hitchhikers a ride. William Calhoun 20, Barry P. Calhoun, 19, and Nathan R. Thomas, 20, all of the 12000 block Eastern avenue in Chase, were charged in the deaths of three men whose bodies were found in the Essex area since October. Daniel E.

Henning, 34, of Edgemere; Robert Lombardi, of the 12000 block Gracewood Drive; and Stephen J. Weatherstein, 20, of the first block Squanto court were the victims. Mr. Weatherstein's body was found at the bottom of a 30-foot well near the suspects' home. His burned pickup truck was parked across the street.

Towson raid nets drugs, 2 arrests By Larry Carson Balilmon County bureau A 16-year-old boy found living with three Essex men arrested last week for murder told police he tried to burglarize the home of County Executive Donald P. Hutchinson. The youth, now being held at the 'Maryland Training School for Boys 1 awaiting a juvenile court hearing, told county detectives about two burglaries he allegedly participated in, showing the places during a "tour." During the ride in the county police cruiser, the youth pointed out Mr. Hutchinson's house and told the detectives: "A state senator lives there-I figured he had a lot of silver," according to a version repeated by Mr. Hutchinson this week.

I The executive related the story during a meeting with his legislative analysts, laughing over the burglar's refer-'ence to him as a "state senator." "I guess he doesn't keep up with cur-Tent events," Mr. Hutchinson joked. The county executive didn't report the incident to police, he later told them, because of the confusion resulting from the death of a very close aunt, and another serious illness in the family. According to a police report, a window screen and plate glass from a door were broken out of the Hutchinson home in the 600 block Dorsey avenue, Essex, sometime between January 10 and 11, but the burglar was apparently scared off. The youth was picked up Jan.

13 and was sent to the Maryland Training School in Cub Hill Jan. 15. He allegedly told police he helped break into the Attic Treasure Antiques-store in the 400 block Eastern avenue in the heart of old Essex Jan. 10, but was frightened off when a burglar alarm began sounding. Police found a broken window there, and silver and brass items piled near a back door.

The youth also allegedly helped burglarize a residence in the 400 block Delaware avenue Dec. 10, escaping with a small safe and about $1,000 in cash. All three sites are within a few blocks of each other. The three men with whom the youth was living were arrested last week and ''1 j.p. "V'" of the 400 block of East 24th street in the city.

They were charged with possession with intent to distribute and simple possession of Dilaudid, a synthetic morphine known as a heroin substitute. About 200 dosage units of Dilaudid, valued at about $5,500, were confiscated, police said. Bail was set at $5,000 for Mr. Hart-mann. Ms.

Sullivan's bail was set at $2,500. After obtaining a search and seizure warrant, police said they raided a Quality Inn room about 2:30 a.m. and arrested Bill Vock, 31 of Flint, and Clifford Lawrence, 33, of Burton, Mich. Both were charged with possession with intent to distribute and simple possession of Dilaudid and possession of marijuana. Police said they seized about 900 dosage units of Dilaudid valued at $25,600, an ounce of marijuana, $15,500 in cash, and a handgun.

Bail for Mr. Lawrence was set at $25,000 and for Mr. Vock at $20,000. All four suspects were being held today at Baltimore County lock-ups. By Norman Wilson and William B.

Talbott City and Baltimore County police confiscated drugs with a street-sale value of $25,600 and seized about $15,500 in cash early today after a raid on a Towson motel room during which two men from Michigan were arrested. In an earlier related incident, police stopped a man and a woman on the Beltway and recovered drugs with a street-sale value of $5,500. Police said the couple was seen leaving the motel room together more than three hours before the raid. Police had staked out the Quality Inn in the 1000 block of York road for some time, a spokesman for county police said. In the first incident, about 11 p.m., police waited until the man and woman had driven away from the motel, so as not to alert the other suspects, and stopped them on the Beltway at Perring parkway about 3 miles away.

Arrested there were Ellwood Hart-mann, 29, of Bellanca court in Baltimore County, and Evelyn Sullivan, 35, Evening Sun pnolo Llgyd Pearwn Driver killed Baltimore County police said the man, who was northbound on York road, was pronounced dead at the scene. The van was discovered by a motorist about 7 a.m. today.
